A Beautiful, Sunny Day
by Loïs Schotanus (written March 23)
Today was a beautiful, interesting day. We had breakfast at 7:30AM and around 8:15AM we got on the bus, ready to work for a long day. Although the sun was shining and the sky was bright blue, it was absolutely freezing. After the 15 minute ride, we arrived at the worksite.
We were assigned different jobs and got to work right away. Most of us went to finish hammering the wooden walls, others prepared the insulation by putting nails through bottle caps. About every 10 minutes we were called to lift up the wooden frames where Mr. Taylor and our Habitat for Humanity Romania supervisors were working to build the roof. After the wooden walls were done, we cemented the styrofoam to the wall. Right before lunch, the wooden structure for the roof was completed. We went to our little, smokey, local restaurant for lunch and had a typical Romanian meal. After being warmed up, we worked for another four hours. The men put all the shingles on and the house already looked finished!
We headed back to our hotel. After endless amounts of time trying to get the cement out of our hair and dealing with cold showers, we were treated with a delicious Italian meal. Instead of sitting as two separate groups, we sat mixed together and I feel we got to know each other so much better. We had some really fun free time afterwards and went to bed tired but happy.
